Nothing brings a family together like a murder next door.

“I just loved how intriguing the mystery is but also the dynamics between a grandmother, a mother, and a teenage daughter." —Reese Witherspoon

Think: Gilmore Girls, but with murder.

High-powered businesswoman Lana Rubicon has a lot to be proud of: her keen intelligence, impeccable taste, and the L.A. real estate empire she’s built. But when she finds herself trapped 300 miles north of the city, convalescing in a sleepy coastal town with her adult daughter Beth and teenage granddaughter Jack, Lana is stuck counting otters instead of square footage—and hoping that boredom won’t kill her before the cancer does.

Then Jack—tiny in stature but fiercely independent—happens upon a dead body while kayaking. She quickly becomes a suspect in the homicide investigation, and the Rubicon women are thrown into chaos. Beth thinks Lana should focus on recovery, but Lana has a better idea. She’ll pull on her wig, find the true murderer, protect her family, and prove she still has power.

With Jack and Beth’s help, Lana uncovers a web of lies, family vendettas, and land disputes lurking beneath the surface of a community populated by folksy conservationists and wealthy ranchers. But as their amateur snooping advances into ever-more dangerous territory, the headstrong Rubicon women must learn to do the one thing they’ve always resisted: depend on each other.

Its fun!

It is fun, and engaging. I am not usually one to give 5 star reviews but i wanted to counteract the 1 star review that, to be honest, seemed in bad faith.

Fun mystery

I’ve been looking for a light hearted fun mystery and this story fits the bill. I liked the narration and liked that the story is set in coastal Northern California. Santa Cruz is my happy place.

Fun book!

Performance was good and the story was fun. The characters were quirky and quintessential small town murder mystery personas. Light, not scary or disturbing at all, which I liked. Set in an interesting location, which provides some geographic learnings and insight into land trusts, etc.

Feel Good Read

If you can put away your knowledge of how things really work, this was a decent story. I enjoyed the characters and the relationship development. The play was a little predictable and mundane but I was intrigued to finish the read and resolve the case.

Great listen that kept me guessing till the end!

Loved the story and the characters. It was also a breath of fresh air to listen to a book that wasn’t chock full of bad language! I found myself trying to guess the “whodunnit” right until the end.

Very enjoyable mystery

This book has a not super easy to figure out mystery, a satisfying mother/ daughter/grandma story line, interesting characters and is an overall feel good story. I really did enjoy it and would probably listen to another were it to be a series.
