Publisher's summary

"Darius has always been one of my favorite people to sing with and to call a friend in this industry and yet even knowing him well for as long as I have, there are so many incredible stories in Life's Too Short that I enjoyed learning for the first time.”Sheryl Crow

A raw, heartfelt memoir from Darius Rucker, the Grammy Award-winning country music sensation and multiplatinum-selling lead singer of Hootie & The Blowfish

In 1986 Darius Rucker cofounded Hootie & The Blowfish at the University of South Carolina. What began as a party band playing frat houses and dive bars quickly became a global pop rock phenomenon through their multiplatinum-selling debut album, cracked rear view, which featured era-defining hit songs like “Only Wanna Be with You,” “Let Her Cry,” and “Hold My Hand.” Later, Darius would chart a pioneering path as a solo country music artist, with classic anthems like “Wagon Wheel” and “Alright.”

Nearly forty years after the band’s formation, Darius tells his remarkable story through the lens of the songs that shaped him—from Al Green, Stevie Wonder, and KISS to Lou Reed, Billy Joel, Nanci Griffith, and so many more.

Set against the soundtrack of his life, Darius recounts his childhood as the son of a single mother in Charleston, South Carolina. He traces the unlikely ascent of his band and shares wild tales of life on the road—but he also faces his missteps, defeats, and demons. As moving as it is entertaining, Life’s Too Short is a timeless book about a man and his music.

I felt like I was there...

I became a fan of Hootie and the Blowfish later in their career and have always wanted to hear how they got together, where they got their name and tales from the Road. I am also a big fan of Darius Rucker Country Artist and enjoyed that ride too. Darius Rucker did an excellent job telling this story from start to finish. I feel like I know him and we have never met. Everything I wanted to know was wrapped up in this book and I highly recommend it to everyone.

It’s honest..

Have been a fan forever.. Have read a lot on the way up to this, there is nothing about this book that seems anything less than - the way it is.. Congratulations to you, and your band, for navigating your way through everything. Can’t wait to see you all this summer!

Emotions

The emotions behind your words Darius, bring us right to those moments in time that you describe for us. Your honesty gives us the real sensations felt behind each breath. I closed my eyes and went on your journey through time with you. Smiling. Laughing. Crying. The world stopped, as I intently absorbed each feeling, behind each word. Raw. Hard. Emotion.
Thank you for being transparent about your valleys and your mountains. Keep soaring baby! Keep soaring to new heights. New roads to travel down. New moments in time… DR

I don’t want it to end!

Darius! I absolutely loved this memoir. I laughed. I sang! I cried. I loved every chapter. So well written. So raw. So real. Hootie is the soundtrack to my twenties and thirties. Darius is the soundtrack for my 40s, 50s and beyond. I will definitely listen again.

You Never Knew THIS

I went to school at Univ of SC just a couple years behind H&tB. They were a well-known local party band at that time - the celebrity came a few years later.
I was at home one night - a newlywed living in Champaign, Illinois. Far from home and achingly homesick. That night the guys made their TV debut on Letterman and I LOST MY MIND. It was the salve I needed for my Carolina Homesick soul.
I was bound to love this book because these guys are “my guys” since I have “known” them for my entire adult life, starting at age 18. I thought I knew everything about them.
I did not.
Darius Rucker’s story about his time with actor Woody Harrelson, early in the book, knocked me over. I won’t spoil it here; suffice it to say I was stunned and shocked and ultimately - grateful.
Later in the book, I found myself thinking of Darius differently, as he described his drug use. That surprised me too - how can you keep such a grueling, demanding schedule in such a condition?
I have tickets to see H&tB this summer and I can’t wait. As an avid fan, I already know a lot about their songs. This book tells me more about the band, and DR. A raw, sincere, no-sugarcoating memoir that pulls no punches.
Even if you’re not a fan or never got into Hootie or don’t care about country music, check it out. There’s something in there for you. Love, loss, obsession, grit. You’ll love it.
